The Benefits of Choosing a Full-Time Martial Arts Teacher Over a Hobbyist Instructor

I recently attended a lecture where the speaker discussed the importance of choosing a full time professional instructor over an instructor who was not, a hobbyist is the term used below.

I have obtained permission to publish some of the points discussed.

Martial arts is not just a physical activity; it's a way of life that encompasses discipline, self-defense, and personal growth. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced practitioner, choosing the right instructor is crucial for your martial arts journey. In this talk, we'll explore why it's often better to go to a full-time martial arts teacher rather than someone who teaches as a hobby.

1. Dedication and Commitment:

Full-time martial arts teachers dedicate their lives to the art. They have made a conscious choice to immerse themselves in the practice, which means they are more likely to be deeply committed to their students' progress. Hobbyist instructors may have other obligations and limited time to devote to teaching, which can impact the consistency of your training.

2. Structured Curriculum:

Professional martial arts instructors typically follow a structured curriculum. This curriculum is designed to ensure that students progress systematically and develop a strong foundation in the art. Hobbyists may not have a well-defined curriculum, leading to gaps in your learning and a less comprehensive understanding of the martial art.

3. Regular Training Hours:

Full-time martial arts teachers often have set training hours and a well-established schedule. This consistency allows students to plan their training effectively. Hobbyist instructors may have unpredictable availability, making it challenging to establish a consistent training routine.

4. In-Depth Knowledge:

Professional instructors usually have a deep and comprehensive understanding of the martial art they teach. They invest time in studying various techniques, styles, and philosophies, which they can impart to their students. Hobbyists may not have the same level of knowledge and expertise.

5. Access to Resources:

Full-time instructors often have access to a wide range of resources, including training equipment, facilities, and guest instructors. This can enhance your learning experience and provide opportunities for cross-training. Hobbyists may lack these resources, limiting the diversity of your training.

6. Long-Term Goals:

If you're serious about advancing in martial arts, a full-time instructor is more likely to help you achieve your long-term goals. They can provide guidance on competitive careers, belt promotions, and professional development within the martial arts community. Hobbyists may not have the same insight or connections.

7. Community and Networking:

Full-time martial arts instructors are deeply embedded in the martial arts community. They can introduce you to a network of like-minded individuals, provide opportunities for sparring and tournaments, and help you become part of a larger martial arts family. Hobbyists may have limited access to such a community.

8. Professionalism and Ethics:

Full-time instructors often adhere to a strict code of ethics and professionalism. They are more likely to prioritize safety, respect, and the well-being of their students. While most hobbyists have good intentions, they may not always uphold the same level of professionalism.

In conclusion, while there are certainly talented hobbyist martial arts instructors, choosing a full-time martial arts teacher offers numerous advantages in terms of commitment, expertise, resources, and long-term support. If you're serious about your martial arts journey and want to maximize your potential, investing in a professional instructor is a wise choice that can lead to a more fulfilling and rewarding experience.
